Crans-Montana is a tourist resort in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Situated on a plateau in the Alps, the resort faces a 180-degree panorama and reaches an altitude of 1,500 metres. Its population fluctuates with the seasons, from 5,000 year-round to 50,000 at the peak of the tourist season. The entire resort area, including the villages below, has a population of 15,000. The resort has been a tourist destination since the end of the 19th century, when it was transformed from a vast plateau used by herds of cattle and their herdsmen into a small mountain town with an international reputation, thanks in particular to the golf and skiing competitions it hosts every year. Numerous leisure and cultural activities have developed here, attracting holidaymakers and visitors in winter and summer alike. The first tourists came to Crans-Montana to take advantage of its "Mediterranean" climate, with annual sunshine levels around 30% higher than in northern Europe.
Crans-Montana straddles three communes (Crans-Montana, Lens, Icogne) stretching from the Rhône plain to the Plaine Morte glacier, at an altitude of 3,000 metres.
